Valencia vs Real Madrid among games off due to Spain flooding
The Spanish Football Federation has called off LaLiga matches in the Valencian region this weekend after devastating flooding swept through the region.
Flash flooding has killed at least 158 people in what has been the worst natural disaster to hit Spain this century.
The RFEF has moved to confirm no football will be played in the region this weekend, with Saturday’s top-flight matches between Valencia and Real Madrid and Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano among the games called off.
An RFEF statement explained: “It has been agreed to postpone matches that were to be played in professional and non-professional competitions, both in 11-a-side football and in indoor football.
The only judge for professional competitions and the only judge for non-professional competitions of the RFEF have reached an agreement this Thursday to postpone various matches that were to be held this weekend in the Valencian Community-hard-hit by the DANA that has taken away lives and done numerous material damages due to flooding.
Beyond the postponements, Spanish football wanted to show its solidarity with those affected by the disaster, especially with relatives of people who have died because of it.
That is why every match that took place yesterday, Wednesday, in competitions organized by the RFEF started with minutes of silence out of respect.
This circumstance will be repeated over the weekend.
A message from Valencia read: “Valencia CF wants to give its most sincerest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their life because of the #DANA.
“Mucha fuerza a todos los vecinos y poblaciones afectados y a los grupos que están trabajando en la prevención y consecuencias de los efectos de la tormenta.”.
“The club is at the disposition of the authorities and of the affected municipalities for all that is needed.”
Also, Real Madrid sent a message of support, writing: “The club president and the Board of Directors want to show their condolences for the families and loved ones of the people who have lost their lives due to the storm that has beaten many areas in our country, especially in the provinces of Valencia and Albacete.
Real Madrid is deeply grieved and is in solidarity with all of those people who have been affected, to whom every last degree of support and all sympathy is extended.
